Information Assembled Relating to the Covid-19 Coronavirus

Given below is a broad range of information we assembled relating to the Covid-19 Coronavirus:
1) Many alcohol distillers are modifying their production to create hand sanitizers and some are starting by giving it away.  For one example, see:

a) Article: Distilling Good Will! Complete List of Distilleries Making Hand Sanitizers Instead of Spirits, MARCH 20, 2020.

b) GlobalNews article: Coronavirus: Alberta distilleries make hand sanitizer amid COVID-19 pandemic, BY CALEY RAMSAY, March 19, 2020.

c) TorontoLife article: “It’s our way of helping”: Spirit of York CEO Gerry Guitor on turning his distillery into a hand sanitizer factory BY JEAN GRANT,  MARCH 18, 2020.  Note: From this article, it appears that there is a shortage of hydrogen peroxide.  I think this is pretty easy to make.
d) If you want hand sanitizer but cannot buy it in retail stores nearby, you can use google maps to “search – nearby” for distillery and then check if they are now making hand sanitizers.  The one that is near to where I live (Spirit of York) is doing so and giving it away to people over 65.
2) Making your own face mask if cannot find one to buy:
If you want to buy a face mask but cannot find one to buy, you can make one yourself.  If you want to do so, there are several “Do It Yourself” instructional videos on YouTube about how to make one.  For example, see:

a) Make a Coffee Filter Respirator: Fast, Easy and Dirt Cheap!, Mar 2, 2020

b) Make a Pandemic Survival Face Mask at home! Salt encrusted center filter may stop some germs!, Mar 8, 2020
This is how to build a multilayered, salt encrusted dust filtering and possibly germ fighting face mask at home, if nothing else is available.

Note: The effectiveness cannot be confirmed for any of these masks.  Therefore, if you want to make one, we recommend you watch these videos and decide which one you feel is the best one for you.
3) De-contaminating face masks for reuse:
Due to a drastic shortage of face masks, there are several organizations now decontaminating face masks for re-use.  For example, see:

a) Some doctors treating coronavirus patients in New York are already reusing face masks because they’re running out of supplies by Jacob Shamsian by Mar 17, 2020

b) NYT article: As Coronavirus Looms, a Hospital Begins Sterilizing Masks for Reuse By Gina Kolata, March 20, 2020

There are several videos on YouTube about decontaminating face masks.  For example, here is one about doing it with a 1% clorox solution:

c) Reusing Face Masks To Prevent Airborne Illnesses

Note: We cannot confirm the effectiveness of any of the methods of decontaminating face masks mentioned above.  Therefore, if you want to decontaminate a face mask, we recommend you do your own research about this topic and decide on the best way for you to do so.
